Some 6000 years ago the first settlers arrived on the windswept islands of Orkney. The new inhabitants discovered a place that promised fertile lands and in the sea that crashed around the seventy islands and skerries, a rich harvest. They established their presence for future generations to behold, building stone circles, brochs, howes and other mysterious monuments hundreds of years before the pyramids were even begun. From these beginnings, Orkney has continued to create a special, timeless atmosphere that has forged a unique and independent culture among its people. Still the land and sea filfill their promised harvest. The inspiration found by the early builders and craftsmen has been passed down through the centuries, an influence which is evident in the crafts employed in the long established companies, such as the Highland Park distillery, which are closely interwoven with the rich tapestry of Orkney's heritage and culture. And Orkney still entrances the beholder so that, once seen, these isles are indeed, ne'er forgotten.
